The history of sugar in Mauritius, L’Aventure du Sucre
A former sugar factory carefully rehabilitated following its closure in 1999, after 200 years of operation, L’Aventure du Sucre is a heritage site that is a pioneer of cultural tourism in Mauritius. The ecomuseum offers a 5,000 m² educational trail and 10 interactive thematic areas inviting visitors to discover the history of an island shaped by sugar and all the secrets of cane. This exceptional plant produces sugar crystals and many direct or indirect co-products including rum, bagasse for electricity and natural fertilizers.
